South Florida has the most active sea turtle nesting coastline in the United States. Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Collier, and Monroe counties collectively host more than 80,000 sea turtle nests annually — primarily loggerhead (Caretta caretta), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), and green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), all federally protected species under the Endangered Species Act.

Artificial lighting is the primary documented cause of sea turtle disorientation and hatchling mortality on Florida's beaches. When artificial light is visible from the beach, nesting females may abort nesting attempts and hatchlings move toward artificial light rather than toward the ocean — a fatal misdirection. Florida has had sea turtle lighting regulations on the books since the 1980s, but enforcement has intensified and more municipalities are moving toward comprehensive dark sky compliance that extends inland, not just to the immediate beach.

Landscape lighting contractors who work near Florida's coast need to understand these requirements before specifying any fixture for a coastal or near-coastal property.


The Sea Turtle Protection Season

March 1 through October 31 is Florida's sea turtle nesting season. Regulations governing coastal lighting are most strictly enforced during this period. Some counties extend enforcement through November 30 in areas with documented late-season nesting.

During nesting season, artificial light visible from the beach that can disrupt sea turtle behavior is prohibited. The specific regulatory requirements vary by county.

These requirements apply primarily to coastal properties within visual range of the beach. Inland properties beyond 300 feet from the mean high water line are typically governed by general lighting ordinances rather than sea turtle-specific rules. What Compliant Coastal Lighting Looks Like

Color temperature: Fixtures must emit in the "sea turtle safe" spectrum — primarily amber and red wavelengths that sea turtles cannot see as effectively as white, blue-white, or cool-white light. The threshold is approximately 560nm wavelength or lower (amber/warm amber). In practical LED terms, this means:

Fixture shielding: Compliant coastal fixtures must be fully shielded so that no light is directed toward the beach or upward (light trespass toward the beach or sky is the violation, not the fixture itself). Full-cutoff optics that direct all light downward, with no side or upward spill, are the standard specification for coastal properties.

Timer or motion control: Many coastal lighting ordinances require that permanent lighting be controllable — timers, motion sensors, or manual shutoffs — so that lights can be turned off during peak nesting activity times (10 PM–6 AM is the highest-risk window).


Getting Ahead of Dark Sky Compliance

The trend in South Florida coastal municipalities is toward stricter, not looser, lighting regulation. Contractors who understand dark sky standards now can:

  1. Specify sea turtle safe fixtures on all coastal jobs — even where not yet required. Clients avoid future retrofits; contractors differentiate on expertise.

  2. Use 2700K or lower as your coastal standard. This is compliant in every current South Florida coastal ordinance and anticipates stricter future requirements.

  3. Introduce clients to IDA (International Dark-Sky Association) fixture certification — fixtures certified by IDA as "dark sky friendly" meet the highest standards and are increasingly what luxury coastal clients in Palm Beach and Naples are requesting.
