Scale and Mealybug Management on Palms in South Florida
South Florida's palm collections — in HOA common areas, commercial landscapes, and residential properties — face pressure from scale insects and mealybugs year-round. Two species demand particular attention: Cycad aulacaspis scale (Aulacaspis yasumatsui), which despite its name attacks palms as well as cycads and has devastated Sago palm plantings across South Florida; and coconut mealybug (Nipaecoccus nipae), which spreads rapidly in warm, humid conditions and infests multiple palm species.
Both are difficult to control once populations are established. Early identification and timely treatment are the only cost-effective management approaches.
Cycad Aulacaspis Scale (CAS)
Cycad aulacaspis scale (Aulacaspis yasumatsui) was introduced to South Florida from Thailand in the 1990s. It is one of the most destructive scale insects ever introduced to Florida and has killed mature Sago palms (Cycas revoluta) that had grown in South Florida landscapes for 30–40 years.
Hosts: Despite the "cycad" in its name, CAS attacks palms. Documented hosts in South Florida include Sago palm (Cycas revoluta, its primary host), Queen Sago (Cycas rumphii), and has been documented on some feather palms in dense infestations. Its primary threat remains cycads.
Identification:
- White, small (1–2mm) circular scale covers on leaf undersides, petioles, and trunks
- Heavy infestations coat the entire plant — foliage turns white from the scale cover density
- Yellowing and browning of foliage progresses from lower fronds upward
- Severely infested plants may have 50–200+ scales per square centimeter of leaf surface
Why CAS is so difficult to control:
- Females can produce multiple generations per year in South Florida's climate
- Scale covers protect insects from contact pesticides
- Infestations often originate on the root ball and trunk before spreading to visible foliage — by the time leaf symptoms appear, the infestation is already severe
Coconut Mealybug
Coconut mealybug (Nipaecoccus nipae) is a soft-bodied scale insect that infests the bases of palm fronds, particularly in the crown area where fronds emerge from the trunk. It secretes honeydew that promotes sooty mold and weakens palm crowns over time.
Hosts: Wide host range including coconut palm, date palm, Royal palm, Sabal palm, and many ornamental palms common in South Florida HOA settings.
Identification:
- Cottony white waxy masses at the bases of fronds and in leaf axils
- Honeydew accumulation and sooty mold on lower fronds
- Palm crown appears sooty or black on close inspection
- Individual mealybugs visible on disturbed leaf axils — oval, soft-bodied, 2–4mm, with waxy white coating

Which Palm Species Are Most at Risk
Cycad aulacaspis scale highest risk: All Cycas species (Sago palm, King Sago, Queen Sago). These are the primary target and can be killed by CAS infestations within 2–3 years if untreated.
Mealybug highest risk: Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), Queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), Phoenix date palms (Phoenix dactylifera, P. sylvestris, P. canariensis), Royal palm (Roystonea regia). These species are commonly in HOA settings and show the highest mealybug infestation rates in South Florida survey data.
Lower risk: Sabal palm (Sabal palmetto), Thrinax species, and Coccothrinax species show lower susceptibility to both CAS and mealybug compared to introduced palm species — one more reason to favor natives in HOA specifications.
Early Detection as the Primary Management Tool
Both CAS and mealybug are far easier to control when detected early. By the time homeowners or HOA managers notice white coatings, sooty mold, or yellowing fronds, populations are already large and treatment costs are higher.
Monthly visual inspection of palm crown bases and lower frond surfaces — particularly from September through April when landscape maintenance crews are changing irrigation schedules — catches both pests at the crawler stage when contact treatments are most effective.
